If you’re really serious about finding the perfect nutritional answer to health, and have not yet heard of it, you should be extremely interested in the following stories, and excited about what it could mean to your health, fitness, and well-being.

The Magic

In 2001, a distinguished nutrition writer for more than twenty years, James Scheer, who had previously written hundreds of articles and many books about this subject, published a new book, entitled “ “The Magic of Chia” (available Amazon). In the first chapter called “The Secret is Out” he told about Ciraldo Chacarito, a 52 year old Tarahumara Indian from Copper Canyon, Mexico, who astoundingly was one of the top finishers in the annual brutal 200 mile endurance run in California, competing with superbly conditioned young athletes, with marvelous training facilities, special trainers,. and the most scientific ultramodern endurance running shoes. Ciraldo, did not specifically train for the race, and ran in native hand-made sandals. He ran again in 1998 and won the 200 mile race. When asked about his reason for success, his only answer was that before and during the race, he ate chia seeds, as his ancestors, the Aztecs, had done more than 800 years ago.

Born to Run

Ciraldo didn’t know why chia worked, just that it did. Today biochemists everywhere understand why. But first, more recent history. In 2003, Christopher McDougall, a journalist whose credits include being an AP war correspondent and later a contributing editor for Men’s Health, and a writer for Esquire, The New York Times Magazine and Runner’s World, on assignment in Mexico for another story, came across the Tarahumara Indians and learned the strange and wonderful story about this tribe of whom he said “may be the healthiest, the most serene people on earth, and the greatest runners of all time”. McDougall has published his book in 2009: “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen”. (Amazon) . Born to Run has been on the New York Times 2009 best seller list for non fiction, reaching as high as fourth place.

Unlocking the Secret

Years before the Magic of Chia and Born to Run, a number of scientists were unlocking the secrets of the magic whole food, chia, finding out what it contained, how it affected the body and where and how it could be commercially grown and harvested. Among the experts, one man stood out: Wayne Coates, Ph.D,, a research professor with the Office of Arid Land Studies at the University of Arizona. He and his colleagues for years cultivated and tested this ancient Aztec seed, Salvia hispanica L. commonly known as chia and for many years used only for the ubiquitous “Chia Pets” that blossomed so rapidly that curious scientists began looking into its powers. Coates researched the seed beginning in 1989 until his retirement in 2007. That research led to the discovery that not only was Chia a substantial source of antioxidants, vitamins, protein and fiber, but one of the highest sources of Omega 3 fatty acids, the special ingredient so important to cardiovascular health that doctors recommend eating fish frequently, especially salmon.

The Genesis of "Mila"

About the time Coates was considering retiring, a successful realtor in Florida was being treated by his doctor for a variety of ailments and one of the treatments recommended was chia seeds. The reaction was remarkable and almost overnight, his ailments were addressed. Immediately he began researching the product, leading him to Dr. Coates. Subsequently, the association of Wayne Coates and the founder of LifeMax company, Jim Wear, culminated in a proprietary mix of chia seed culled from the years of research of the best varieties and the geographic environment for maximum nutrition. It included a process for harvesting, opening and slicing the seed to protect its delicate oil. All of this led to the launch , in late 2008 of Mila, the miracle seed. In 2009, thousands of distributors have been recruited followed by an avalanche of loyal re-users in the U.S., as well as Asia and Europe. The direct health benefits suggest the reason.

Health Benefits From Whole Food-No Processing, No Additives

A recent article from the Mayo Clinic referred to the Journal of American Medical Association, JAMA, on the importance of diet, indicating that:

· More than two thirds of all deaths in the U.S. are diet related!

· And, 50% of all deaths are caused by coronary occlusion, the blockage of blood flow to the heart or the brain!

Directly pertinent to human diet are five of the most important preventative health benefits that this super food, Mila the miracle seed, provides:

1. Omega-3 fatty oils. The Mayo Clinic reports that this substance found in fish “appears to reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack by a third or more” and it recommends salmon as having the largest amount of these oils. Omega-3 oils are also believed to lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. The one raw super food carries 8 times the concentration by ounce of salmon, without the risk of any contamination, like mercury.

2. Antioxidants. It is believed that foods such as berries, and other fruits and vegetables, but especially blueberries, are effective protection against many types of cancer, coronary and Alzheimer’s disease. This one super food has 3 times the antioxidants as blueberries.

3. Weight Loss.Obesity is a national epidemic with 1 out of 5 of our children obese or overweight with many more at risk, and 8 out of 10 adults over 25 overweight. This super food is also a hydrophilic colloid, that is, a substance that can absorb more than 12 times its weight in water, making a gelatin substance that maintains and regulates the body’s absorption of nutrients and body fluids and keeps one feeling satisfied and thus a natural diet/weight loss enhancer

4. Vitamins and Minerals The super food contains by volume:

· 6 times the calcium of milk

· 3 times the iron of spinach

· 16 times the magnesium of broccoli

· 2 the potassium of bananas

· As much vitamin C as 7 oranges

5. Energy BoosterThe super food, by virtue of it extensive hydration properties, together with its natural regulated delivery of nutrients to the body is an energizer of endurance both to the body and the brain. The ancient Aztecs, and their descendants, the Tarahumaras, call it the running seed because of the strength, endurance and energy it provided.
